Abstract

700,887. Joint-making packing. CHICAGO FORGING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 1, 1951, No. 22843/51. Class 122 (5) [Also in Group XXVIII] A rubber or like packing ring 10 for a pipe joint encloses a ferrule 2 having a sharp edge adapted to dig into the pipe. The ferrule is in part circumferentially continuous, has an external annular rib embedded in the packing ring, and has an, inwardly bent lip 6, divided, by slots 7 into a plurality of tongues. The ferrule may be made of resilient sheet metal and formed to fit closely on the pipe so that the tongues are initially spring-biased against the pipe surface. A part only of the edge of each tongue may be bent inwardly.
