Abstract
699,904. Ventilation. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA FLAKTFABRIKEN. Feb. 10, 1950 [March 30, 1949; Sept. 20, 1949], No. 3446/50. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] In a plant for heating, cooling and ventilating a ship's cabins, each cabin contains a casing 13 through which a reversible fan 20 passes air from the external atmosphere or from the cabin, into or back into the cabin, or from the cabin out into the external atmosphere, there being a bottom opening 15 and, at the top, an opening 16 to the cabin and an opening 18 communicating with an opening in the cabin wall structure. Moreover, the casing contains a heat-exchanger 21 fed with steam or hot water or with cooled water from a central plant (see Group XIII) on the ship, so that air passed into the cabin may be heated or cooled and there is damper control, e.g. a damper 31, for the fresh air communication and for at least one of the openings to the cabin. The fresh air opening 18 communicates with a top chamber 24, with an inclined bottom wall 25, so that fresh air may pass through openings 25a, 25b and side passages 26, 27 by way of openings 23 into a bottom rear chamber 28 behind a partition 30. By positioning the damper 31, fresh air, cabin air or a mixture of both may be drawn up by the fan 20 to pass into the cabin through the opening 16. The fan assembly is removable and when placed in position it is automatically connected to an electricity supply. There may be air connection openings in the side passages 26, 27 or in the top of the casing, e.g. a valve-controlled opening in the top chamber 24 may pass fresh air directly to the cabin, by-passing the heat-exchanger 21, or this chamber may connect to a nipple, Fig. 5 (not shown), communicating with the fresh air and formed on a ring between the porthole glass and cabin wall. In another form. Fig. 2 (not shown), the reversible fan is at the bottom of the casing 13 which comprises simply a single chamber or passage containing a gilled heat-exchanger and may be arranged near a port-hole, there being insulation between the cabin wall and casing. The fresh air opening 18 in this form is controlled directly by a damper pivoted above it and is shielded from rain. The upper cabin opening 16 is also controlled directly by a damper and being in the top of the casing may be situated directly beneath the port-hole so that fresh air may be drawn into this opening when the port-hole is open. The casing may be connected by a duct to the port-hole.
