Abstract

705,949. Ventilating ships. GIBBS & SON, Ltd., J., LOWE, R., and WEBBER, L. V. July 10, 1952 [Sept. 17, 1951], No. 21825/51. Class 137 Apparatus for ventilating holds and between deck enclosures of ships, particularly holds &c. carrying low flash point cargoes, comprises an extract shaft 3 mounted on an upper deck 2 communicating with an enclosure E to be ventilated, a duct 5 terminating in a nozzle 7 disposed in the shaft 3 and being connected to the discharge side of a fresh air fan 6 insulated with flame proof coverings, and a venturi structure 8 supported co-axially within the shaft above the nozzle 7. The shaft 3 terminates in a cowling 13 having a deflector 14 and detachable flame proof gauze panels 15. The fresh air inlet comprises a shaft 16 which extends close to the floor of the enclosure E and is provided with a cowling 18 covered with detachable flame proof coverings 19. An inverted venturi structure and fan may be fitted to introduce a positive supply of fresh air into the enclosure E. In a modification, Fig. 3, a hinged flap valve 21 is provided in the duct 5.
