Abstract

699,899. Seats. RITTER CO., Inc. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 6, 1951], No. 22437/52. Class 52(ii) A head rest for an operating chair is carried by two relatively pivoted members which are vertically adjustable on the chair back and are self locking in adjusted position, adjustment and unlocking being capable of performance by one hand only. As shown the head pieces 15 are mounted on a yoke 14 pivoted in arms 13 forming part of a member 12 which frictionally engages a shaft 36 connecting one end of two spaced and parallel links 11. The other ends of the links 11 are secured to a shaft 28 mounted in bearings in a member 10 and carrying a worm wheel which is rotated, and thereby angularly -adjusting the links 11, by a worm operable by means of a knob 25. The member 10 has a curved part 18 vertically slidable between rollers 19, 20 on the chair back 17 and is automatically locked in position by a lever 22 provided with teeth 23 engageable with one or other of the teeth 24 on the chair back. The lever 22 extends to the knob 25 so that pressure on the end of the lever 22 against the influence of the spring 26 permits vertical adjustment of the head rest, while rotation of the knob gives angular adjustment of the head rest, non-reversal of the worm and worm wheel providing the self locking.
