Abstract
Gelatinization of spinning solutions containing polymers or co-polymers of acrylonitrile is reduced by rigorously drying the solvent, prior to use, to a water content of not more than 1.5 per cent and preferably below 0.2 per cent. The solvent may first be dried with anhydrous cupric sulphate or sodium sulphate and then subjected to azeotropic distillation with the aid of methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, benzene or toluene. Solvents specified are gamma-butyrolactone, tetramethylene sulphone, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and dimethyl formamide.
