Abstract

Aromatic sulphoclorides are prepared by reacting an aromatic compound possessing an activated hydrogen atom on a carbon atom with sulphuryl chloride or a mixture of sulphur dioxide and elementary chlorine under anhydrous conditions in the presence of dimethyl formamide at 10 to 100 DEG C. Other solvents may also be present. p-Anisole sulphochloride, styrene-p-sulphochloride and beta-naphthol-1-sulphochloride are prepared in examples.
