Abstract

697,962. Wrenches. MATTHEWS, F. W. M. May 30, 1951 [June 7, 1950], No. 14234/50. Class 61 (iii). In a pipe wrench having a fixed jaw 2 carried by a shank 1 provided on one edge with a rack 10, a carriage 4 slidable on the shank carries the pivoted jaw 7 and a releasable worm 13 which engages the rack. The jaw 7 is pivoted to the carriage by a pin 6 a leaf spring 9 being provided to urge the jaw away from the shank. The worm 13 is rotatably and slidably mounted on a rod 12 pivoted at one end in a recess 11 in the carriage. Pivotal movement of the rod may be prevented by the engagement of a grub screw in the side of the carriage with a recess in the rod. Upward longitudinal movement of the worm on the rod 12 is limited by a recessed face 15 of the carriage, the worm being held in engagement with the rack by the shoulder 16. In a modification the worm is provided with a c cylindrical extension which enters a correspondingly shaped recess in the carriage the annular end of the worm bearing against the external face of the carriage instead of against the face 15.
