Abstract

697,601. Nuclear reactors. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 26, 1946 [Aug. 4, 1945], No. 22387/46. Class 39(iv) A nuclear reactor generating useful heat comprises spaced elements of fissionable heavy metal within a shielded zone, moderating material, and means for withdrawing heat by circulating a hydrocarbon oil. Rods 1 of U<SP>235</SP>, Pu<SP>239</SP> or U<SP>233</SP> are surrounded by the oil, acting as a coolant and as a moderator, this reacting mass being encased in two or more alternate layers of metal and non- metal and an outer layer 4 of concrete and the whole buried below the surface 7 of the ground. A pump 10 circulates the oil through a heat exchanger 9 and surge chamber 10a from which gases of decomposition may be withdrawn. The oil used is preferably rich in aromatic constituents. With an oil having a low boiling-point, a condenser may be used at 9. Tarry materials are removed at 8a. In a modification, Fig. 2, rods of fissionable material are coated with a light metal (A1 or Be) and inserted concentrically in light-metal tubes 12. A liquid or solid moderator fills the space around the tubes and the oil coolant is circulated within the tubes. Water or D 2 O is suggested as a moderator.
