The invention relates to a thorium power breeder reactor with a container, one in the core arranged in the container, the core having a solid moderator matrix, the moderator consists of carbon or beryllium and is provided with a coating that protects it from contact with protects the coolant and limits a number of cooling channels, with a number of fuel elements in the cooling channels, each of which is thorium-232 as a fertile material and uranium-233 as fissile Contains fuel, with a liquid metallic coolant, with devices that the let liquid metallic coolant flow through the channels and with a reflector, which surrounds the core and consists of moderator material.
Nuclear reactors, which act as heterogeneous reactors with spatially separated fuel, coolant and Trained as moderators, they can work and are as slow or fast reactor types accordingly became known as thermal reactors or as fast breeder reactors.
Known heterogeneous thermal reactors are operated either with light water as moderator and coolant and, because of its neutron absorption, with enriched uranium as fuel (cf. the magazine "Glückauf", 92, 1956, issue 47/48, p. 1420, left column, lines 1 up to 3 and 23 to 25) or they work with graphite or D 2 O as moderator and CO 2 or D 2 O as coolant and with the cheaper natural uranium.
In addition to water, organic liquids or liquid metal are also used as coolants and moderators, like liquid sodium, became known (see German patent specification 952 919, p. 4, left column, second paragraph).
In addition to these known reactors working with thermal neutrons, the one mentioned also has rapid reactor in the form of the so-called breeder reactor gained importance. Since the absorption cross section The building materials of a reactor for fast neutrons is very small, one can get through corresponding arrangement achieve that the majority of the neutrons not used for fission leaves the reactor core and is cleavable in a jacket made of U-238 or Th-232 that surrounds it Pu or U-233 (see British patent specification 771111, p. 1, left column, line 9 to 19, and p. 2, left column, lines 15 to 34, and German patent specification 952 919, p. 1, left column, second paragraph).

den bei dem geschilderten Brutvorgang erzielbaren Brutfaktor C=I oder größer zu erhalten.to obtain the breeding factor C = I or greater that can be achieved in the described breeding process.
»Proceedings of the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy«, Vol. 3, 1955, S. 98 bis 115).Although thermal breeder reactors are also known per se, in which the conversion of Th-232 takes place in fissile U-233, it is difficult to achieve a high breeding factor with this type of reactor, and in a thermal sodium-graphite reactor, for example, this is only about 0.8 (cf. »Proceedings of the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy ", Vol. 3, 1955, pp. 98 to 115).
In the known fast reactor types that use the conversion of uranium-238 to plutonium, On the other hand, there are considerable problems with regard to heat dissipation and regulation. A serious obstacle to the operation of such a fast breeder reactor with sodium as a coolant remains the achievement of high specific power without reducing the neutron energy spectrum.
709 587/436709 587/436
From the above discussions it can be seen that one type of reactor which requires the use of building material regardless of its neutron absorption cross-section, as in the case of the fast breeder reactor, it is particularly advantageous if a powerful heat dissipation and a powerful reactor control is guaranteed. This would result in a significant reduction in the cost of extraction from nuclear energy.
It is therefore the object of the invention to provide a reactor which is similar to that of the fast breeder reactor possible use of building material regardless of its neutron absorption cross-section and the abovementioned occurring in the operation of fast breeder reactors Solves problems of heat dissipation and regulation.
This is done according to the invention in that a number of thorium-232 rods are arranged in the reflector and that the ratio of coolant to moderator is selected such that a neutron spectrum with an average neutron energy in the range of approximately 1 to 10 5 electron volts is established in the core . The reactor according to the invention is thus designed as an epithermal reactor.
This results in comparison with the known fast breeder reactors and the thermal reactors the advantage that sufficient heat dissipation and satisfactory regulation is possible, without the advantages of the fast breeder reactor with the use of building material without regard account for its neutron absorption cross-section.
Es zeigt F i g. 1 einen Aufriß des Reaktors,The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing, for example. It shows F i g. 1 an elevation of the reactor,

The invention provides an epithermal thorium power breeder reactor. The basis of the invention is the recognition that the neutron economy of the intermediate thorium U-233 cycle is excellent. Thus, it is found that in the range between 0.1 and 10 megaelectronvolt Eta (η- average number of neutrons released per neutron absorbed in the fuel) for U-233 is fairly constant with energy and in fact has no preferred energy range. At the same time, however, the cross-sections for most poisons or neutron catchers decrease very quickly. Although the Eta for U-233 would allow operation in the fast range, operation in the epithermal range allows easier heat dissipation and eases control problems. For efficient heat dissipation, one would use a molten inorganic medium, such as a liquid metal, alloy or molten alkali fluoride salt, with high heat transfer characteristics and low vapor pressure.
The preferred molten agent is sodium. However, hydrocarbons or aqueous Coolant can be used if there is only a small amount in the core. The necessary one Degree of deceleration would be from graphite, beryllium, hydrogen or deuterium and theirs Compounds and alloys or other acceptable moderators. Because sodium is a relatively light element, which, however, has the neutron energy spectrum in terms of energy not too effectively diminished, the presence of relatively large amounts of sodium can in the core, which are pumped through at a relatively slow speed, the achieve desired epithermal spectrum without the use of a separate moderator. Of the The fuel contains thorium as its base, which has higher fuel temperatures with correspondingly increased Allows heat flows, specific powers and longer fuel element life. Of the Fission or fuel cycle is thorium with U-233 as fissile material, although U-235 nuclear fuel could be used for initial commissioning. The intermediate thorium breeder (ETB) has in comparison with a thermal thorium breeder a smaller, more compact core, the less Braking agent (or no braking agent if there is enough sodium), decreased thermal and biological Shielding and smaller tanks possible. The economy achieved with the smaller size is remarkable. Significant excess reactivity is not required during the Starting up the reactor Problems related to the xenon or as a result of exceeding it or oversteering result, overcome. Separate thorium brood coats can be used placed around the active core to promote efficient breeding. Such a Brood mantle is all the more available, the higher the number of those escaping from an epithermal core Is neutrons. Without a separate brood mantle, the breeding ratio is not that high.
The concept outlined above in general terms is not limited to any particular core design or construction limited to certain core constituents, but also applicable to various core constructions, which use different braking means, fuel elements and coolants and also on homogeneous as well as heterogeneous systems can be used. For example, the sodium-graphite reactor core, which is described in the aforementioned Geneva conference document, for this application be used by increasing the amount of graphite in the core to achieve an epithermal Neutron spectrum from a thermal neutron spectrum through the use of thorium-uranium fuel elements of the type described in the paper by Chauncey Starr, where thorium U-233 incubation in one thermal sodium-graphite reactor is explained, and through the possible use of a thorium brood mantle is decreased. Therefore, the following detailed discussion, which is a special Reactor design describes, in the sense that it is understood in a non-limiting way Way only serves to illustrate the basic concept, which is naturally comprehensive and also at other core designs can be applied.
Fig. 1 shows the overall view of the reactor in section. The entire system lies below ground level and is embedded in concrete. The core 10 is contained in a steel core tank 2 which is surrounded by a secondary container 3 to contain the coolant in the event of the tank 2 breaking. This arrangement is surrounded by a heat shield 4. A core cavity liner 5 surrounds the reactor and is provided with thermal insulation 6 on its sides and top and with concrete 7 on its bottom as a base for the reactor. Below and above the reactor core 10 are chambers 8 and 9 fully filled with sodium. The sodium coolant inlet line 11 runs to the floor through the reactor support structure into the lower chamber 8 and then on into a single upwardly directed passage through the core 10 and leads then to the reactor outlet line 12 to the outside. The coolant lines have double-walled partella and 12a with a height which is equal to the sodium level in the core container 2 in order to prevent the sodium from seeping out into the lines 11 and 12. The upper fully filled chamber 9 is intended to create a heat reservoir against sudden changes in temperature and to prevent the formation of eddies on the outlet line 12. The control rod mechanism 13 is a ground drive and is located within a thimble 14 which runs through the core tank-reactor bearing into and above the core 10. Its normal retracted position is above the core in the upper fully filled chamber 9 and it is deployed by lowering it into the core. It is secured against failure in that, in such a case, it falls into the core. The drive device 15 is designed in the usual way and can be a worm gear or a rack and pinion arrangement. A bellows 16 and a connected pipe form a continuation of the secondary containment tank 3. The construction is chosen so that jamming of the control rod is avoided when the reactor tank heats up and expands radially. The plate 17 indicates the connection between the control rod thimble and the drive device. Spent fuel elements 18 can be stored in a rack in the sodium plant to allow short-lived fission products to break down prior to removal from the reactor. An auxiliary fuel rod 19 can likewise be stored in the reactor until needed. The upper shield comprises an outer rotating plug 20 and an inner rotating plug 21, the inner plug being eccentrically arranged. The sealing of this stopper is made with low-melting fusible alloys 22, such as. B. from lead bismuth, achieved between the plugs. By rotating the plugs 20 and 21 after the seal 22 has melted, an access hole 23 can be set by partial switching over a specific fuel channel for inserting or removing fuel elements into the reactor by means of a gripping hook or other suitable handling device. An inactive gas atmosphere, such as helium, is maintained over all sodium surfaces, and the areas outside the core tank and around the sodium piping 24 are provided with an inert gas, such as nitrogen.
Bei geringeren Temperaturen als etwa 538° C ist eine Umhüllung nicht erforderlich.F i g. 2 shows in section a detail from the cross section of the core 10. The core comprises a A plurality of unit cells 25 with a hollow, square-shaped, central channel 26. The unit cell 25 consists of the braking agent, graphite and preferably beryllium. "Beryllium" is understood here to mean both the metal and beryllium oxide. The beryllium or another braking agent comprises approximately 0 to 50% of the core volume, with approximately 20% preferred in this construction to achieve the epithermal spectrum will. When approximately 20% of the core volume is beryllium, the mean fissure energy is about 100 electron volts. Rule elements 27 take three of the unit cells instead of the fuel elements a, there are a total of twelve control elements in the core. The reflector jacket area 28 consists of a braking substance, expediently graphite, and thorium for neutron absorption. The thorium can be in any form, such as metal, salt, or Solution. In this embodiment the thorium is in the form of metal rods made of stainless steel are coated and cooled with sodium (not shown). The thorium takes up approximately 10 percent by volume of the jacket, although this percentage can be varied satisfactorily. Beryllium inserts 29 fit between the cells 25 and the jacket 28. For operation at high temperatures (e.g. at 593 ° C) can the beryllium with a thin envelope 30 (z. B. of 0.254 mm thickness) a corrosion-resistant metal or an alloy such as stainless steel, zirconium or titanium to protect it against the sodium coolant, with stainless steel being preferred. Sheathing is not required at temperatures below approx. 538 ° C.
In Fig. 3, an enlarged unit cell 25 containing a fuel element 31 is shown. This fuel element is an element of the needle or pin type having a number of needles or pins 32 arranged transversely to the longitudinal axis of the element and held by end pieces 33 by welding or mechanical means on one side of the frame 34, which consists of two Side plates made of the above-mentioned corrosion-resistant metals or alloys. The pins 32 are not attached to the frame 34 at their other end to allow differential thermal expansion. The coolant flow is therefore in the form of a cross-like flow across the individual fuel pins. As one can see in the section according to FIG. 4, the pins 32 are preferably comprised of a thorium-uranium alloy core 35 having approximately 3 to 15 weight percent uranium, and preferably about 7 weight percent thorium, with a coating of the corrosion resistant metal. Thorium and uranium oxides and ceramics can also be used in the fuel elements, e.g. B. a sintered mass of UO 2 -ThO 2 . As one can see from FIG. 4 recognizes, the pins 32 are aligned in parallel rows. The coolant flows across these pins in a cross pattern. This type of fuel element has a high specific power and mechanical and metallurgical reliability.
Dieses umfaßt einen Thorium- Another suitable fuel element is shown in FIG. This includes a thorium
