Abstract
697,396. Welding by pressure. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DONELAN, J. A. June 28, 1951 [July 5, 1950], No. 16837/50. Class 83 (iv). Two metal members separated by an insulating material deformable by heat are resistance - welded by applying heat to or generating heat in the region of the desired weld, displacing the heated insulating material from the region to permit the establishment of a conductive path between the members through which current is passed. In an embodiment two metal foil sheets 10, 11 coated with, e.g., polythene layers 12, 13, are connected at 16, e.g. by a conductive clamp and electrodes 14, 15, preferably spring-pressed, are applied so that current flows to locally heat the sheets 10, 11 and layers 12, 13. Electrode pressure displaces the layers 12, 13 and welding is effected between the sheets 10, 11. The layers 12, 13 may be fused adjacent the weld. In printed circuit manufacture a polythenecoated metal foil 32 is folded over a baketized paper base 30 and welding as above is effected in an aperture 33 with the foil 31 itself forming the connection 16. Unwanted foil is afterwards removed. As an alternative to passing current through the sheets for local heating the electrodes may be heated. According to the Provisional Specification copper foil polythene coated sheets may be welded by 50-cycle alternating current.
