Abstract

480,374. Electric soldering tools. BRITISH INDUSTRIAL SOLVENTS, Ltd., and BROWN, J. Y. Oct. 10, 1936, No. 27555. [Class 83 (iv)] An electric soldering-device, particularly for jointing tubes for electrical conduits, comprises work-gripping jaws provided with insulated electric heaters, which are mounted on a pair of handles arranged scissors-wise and having releasable means to lock the jaws in closed position. The device comprises jaws 12, 13 of metal of high conductivity such as aluminium, connected through base-plates 7 to bosses 8 pivoted at 3, 4 to the handles 6, 5 of a tongs. Between the jaws and the plates 7 are sheets of asbestos 11 and flat resistance elements consisting of wire or tape wound on mica or the like so that they are electrically insulated from the jaws. The terminals are connected in junction boxes 14, provided with flexible leads 15, 16 and plug 27<1>. The elements are arranged in parallel or series and switches may be provided to vary the circuit. The heating elements may be replaced by a primary of a transformer so that current is induced in the work. A sliding stirrup 23 or pivoted catch is provided to hold the levers closed. The tubes 27, 28, Fig. 3, together with the sleeve 29 are mounted in the recesses 17, 18 in the jaws which are grooved on their upper ends at 30 so that solder and flux may be applied, which passes through holes 31 in the sleeve to form the joint. The jaws may be provided with detachable inserts 19 or 20 to suit tubes of different sizes. The handles may be tubular or of channel section to contain the flexible leads and may be covered with insulation or earthed.
