Abstract

696,840. Dividing by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and KERR, R. Feb. 4, 1952 [Feb. 16, 1951], No. 3828/51. Class 83 (iv). A process for the high temperature cutting of alloy steels by means of an oxygen jet includes the step of directing into the cutting zone an oxidizable adjuvant powder material comprising 1-50 per cent by weight of silicon and 0-40 per cent by weight of aluminium, the remainder being iron. The adjuvant material may be in the form of a mixture of powdered elements, ternary or binary alloys or both, or binary alloys and elements and in one example comprises 90 parts by weight of ferrosilicon with 10 parts by weight of aluminium, the ferrosilicon containing 25 per cent silicon and 75 per cent iron, by weight. Preferred compositions contain 10-30 per cent silicon and 5-20 per cent aluminium.
