Abstract

696,731. Universal joints. SOC. APPLI= CAZIONI GOMMA ANTIVIBRANTI S.A.G.A. SOC. PER AZIONI. Sept. 18, 1951 [Sept. 30, 1950], No. 21920/51. Class 80 (ii). In a coupling of the type in which a ring of rubber blocks is pre-compressed between alternate abutments on driving and driven members it is so arranged that the strain due to precompression at points remote from the coupling axis is not less than that at points nearest to the axis. In the embodiment shown the rubber blocks are compressed in two stages. In the first stage the adjacent ends of the blocks 1 are bonded to a member 2 the limbs of which are close together initially but which are forced into the position shown in Fig. 6 by wedge members 4. This applies a compression 2d, Fig. 4, to the outer edge e of the block, the compression falling to zero at the inner edge i. The members 4 are then moved radially inwards to the assembled position which further compresses the rubber by an equal amount 2a at all radial distances. It is so arranged that a+d=k/a.e/i Where k is not less than 1. If k is greater than 1 a bending moment is set up which opposes deflection of the blocks due to centrifugal force at high speeds. The members 4 serve as the abutment members and are provided with holes 4' for bolting to the coupling members. Specification 662,337. is referred to.
