Abstract

694,423. Measuring roughness electrically. REASON, R. E.. and KAPELLA, Ltd. April 4, 1950 [April 4, 1949], No. 9112/49. Class 40. (i) [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIV] A pick-up head for use in surface roughness measuring apparatus comprises a body member E hinged to a back plate F carrying a spigot F1 for attachment to means adapted to traverse the pick-up head along a straight line, a nosepiece H carried by the body member and provided with a swivelling shoe H1 for engaging a test surface J; and a stylus K carried on the end of one arm of a lever K1 whose other arm carries the armature of a variable inductance K2 mounted on the body member. The hinge between the body member and back plate comprises a spring ligament G clamped at G1 to the latter and at G2 to the former, and a pair of spaced-apart point abutments F2 adjustably carried by the back plate and urged into contact with the spring ligament by a spring G3, hinging about the abutments being limited by an arm E1 and shoulders F4. The fulcrum joint of the lever comprises a pair of spring ligaments L secured at their respective ends to the body member and a block K3 carried by the lever, and a knife edge E2 adjustably carried by the. body member and held in contact with the block by a pair of springs (not shown). The swivelling shoe provides a datum for working movements of the stylus normal to the test surface, and the variations in the value of the variable inductance due to these working movements are utilized for measuring the roughness of the test surface.
