Class 44 A door latch comprises a mounting plate 10 having on the outside a pivotally mounted latch member and on the inside a detent 19 mounted to turn therewith and a three armed lever 31, Fig. 1 having a pawl 30 engaging the detent to secure the latch in the fastening position, an arm 41 for engagement e.g. by an outside pushbutton to release the pawl and an arm 42 engageable by the arm 46, Fig. 5, of a release lever 45 mounted on a right-angle flange 11 and actuated by inside means. The latch member has a striking arm 13, Fig. 7, and a retaining arm, a pin 20 from the latter passing through an arcuate slot 21 in the plate 10 for engagement in an opening in the detent. A double spring 40 surrounding the pivot pins 34, 39 of the detent and pawl urges the latch member in the releasing direction and the pawl to the retaining position. As the door closes the latch member engages a channelled striking plate 23, Fig. 8, the arm 13 striking the face 27 to turn the arm 14 into contact with the face 28 where it is retained by the engagement of the pawl 30 with the shoulder 32 of the detent or, in a partly latched position, with a safety shoulder 29. A latch housing 17 secured to the plate 10 rides over the surface 25. The inside release lever 45 is operated through a link 58 connected to an arm 59. Movement of the lever in an anticlockwise direction causes the arm 46 to bear downwardly on the arm 42 of the pawl. Movement in a clockwise direction places a shoulder 62 under a flange 44 on the pawl arm 42 so that the latch cannot be released from the outside. The lever 45 is retained in the neutral or locking positions by a blade spring 52 fixed to the stud 47 and having a nose 55 for engagement in either of a pair of recesses 56 in the lever 45. The lever 45 may be actuated by the arms 67, 68 of a lever 64 controlled by an outside key lock.
