Abstract

694,147. Spectacle frames. KIMMEL, G. P., and CROWELL, A. H. June 18, 1951 [March 7, 1951], No. 14456/51. Class 97 (i). Frames of the split-rim type are provided with latching means for each rim comprising a bifurcated element arranged at one end of the rim to form an open channel, a link pivoted at the other end of the rim and a locking lever pivoted to the link, one end of the link being adapted to fit in the channel and the lever being formed with a cam surface adapted to act upon the underside of the bifurcated element to hold the ends of the rim closed. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, each lens is held in an internal groove in a metal rim 16 having projections 20 engaging a plastic frame, e.g. of xylonite, which extends over only the upper portions of the rims and forms a bridge and carries temple supports. Each rim is split at 21 and causes a pair of lugs 22 to which are pivoted at 24 on link 25 having a lever 27 pivoted thereto at 26. The link can be rotated to pass between a pair of lugs 31 at the opposite side of the split in the rim whereafter, on rotation of the lever 27 a cam surface 35thereon presses the lugs 31 towards the lugs 22 to clamp the lens in the rim. To lock the lever a headed projection 65, Fig. 14, may be provided on the rim to engage a hole 63 in the lever, or the latter may be channel-shaped and of springy metal to allow the headed projection to be pressed thereon. The invention may be applied to frames made wholly of metal, the temple hinges being connected to the rims above the latches.
