693,267. Electric systems for indicating and transmission of correspondence control. STEIRISCHE GUSSTAHLWERKE AKT.-GES July 23, 1951 [Aug. 12, 1950]. No. 17378/51. Class 40 (i). [Also in Group XXII] In a continuous casting- machine the level of the molten metal in the mould is determined by using the contents of the mould to influence the inductivity of a coil traversed by an electric current and arranged adjacent said surface but outside the mould. A coil 10 may be arranged about a copper mould 1 cooled by a non-magnetic water jacket 2. Steel may be poured at 5 and the solid bar 8 is withdrawn by rollers 9. When the level 7 falls, the alternating current in the coil 10 increases and may show on an indicator, be used to increase the flow of molten steel or reduce the feed by the rollers 9. The mould etc. are made of non- magnetic material to avoid blotting out the small changes in inductivity due to changes in level of the molten metal. The coil 10 may be arranged in one arm of a bridge circuit and the resistances in the other arms are adjusted to give no current through the meter for a definite level of the molten metal. When the level alters current flows through the meter and this may be amplified for operating the control means. When non-magnetic metal is cast, changes in eddy-current losses alter the inductivity of the coil.
