Abstract

693,089. Two-part couplings. AIRTRON, Inc. Oct. 3, 1951, No. 23076/51. Class 38 (i). A device for connecting power cables consists of a male member 12 with a contact finger 18 having an annular groove 102 cut in it, and an indexing pin 91 within an annular recess 91a; and of a female member 14 having a conducting sleeve 58 prolonged in the form of a tube 80, there being longitudinal slits 92 dividing the tube into several contact fingers 94 with a spring 96 encircling their free ends. Within the tube 80 is an index element 82 with a bore 90 to receive the indexing pin 91. A sleeve 108 with a locking portion 110 is urged to the right by a spring 116. To connect the two members 12 and 14 the sleeve 108 is moved to the left and the member 14 is pushed on to the finger 18, locking of the finger 18 within the fingers 94 being achieved by means of a plurality of balls 100, placed in apertures 104 in oertain of the fingers 94, the inner apertures of which are of lower diameter than the balls, which are forced into the groove 102 and held there by the portion 110 of the sleeve 108 when released. The indexing pin 91 and the bore 90 are of complementary cross-section for each different set of cables to be connected in order to prevent mismatching. The contact 18 is bolted to a panel 16 through the intermediary of an insulating flange 28 and metal reinforcing plate 34, the flange bearing on a metal washer 20 secured to the contact 18 by a dowel pin 22, and located by tongues 54 in recesses in the contact. The cable 66 is secured in a lateral bore of the sleeve 58 by means of an axial screw 70 having a semi-spherical end 72 for gripping the cable and a screwdriver slot 74 which is accessible before the parts are completely assembled. The contact parts may all be jacketed with rubber.
