Abstract

674,443. Cable couplings. MAUPAS, C. F. E. March 16, 1950 [March 18, 1949], No. 6646/50. Class 38 (i). A cable-end connecting device for a metalsheathed, mineral-insulated cable 8 comprises a hollow body 1 which grips the sheath at one end by means of a splitring 2 and a nut 3, and at the other end receives an insulating plug 11 provided with apertures for connectors 10 which join the conductors 7 of the cable 8 to the cores of a cable 9, the body having a filling hole 6 and airescape vents, and being mounted in position mechanically by securing-means 4, 5. The plug 11 has a frusto-conical base engaged by a conical ring 16 on which abuts a nut 12 which screws into the body, a spigot 13 on the plug 11 engaging a recess 13a on the body to prevent its rotation by the ring 12. Liquid or plastic filling 30 is inserted under pressure through the hole 6 which is then plugged by a screw 6a. The sizes of the connectors 10 are varied to suit the cables 8, 9, and multicore cables may be accommodated by an equal number of connectors in one plug (Figs. 2 and 5, not shown). Fig. 4 shows details of connections to the connector 10. Cable 9 is force-fitted and/or welded in one end, whereas the reduced other end is crimped (and soldered if desired) on to cable 7, a metal sleeve 14 (or nut, Fig, 5 (not shown)), being flattened (or threaded) on to the threaded part.
