692,034. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Feb. 19, 1951 [Feb. 17, 1950; Nov. 30, 1950], Nos. 4181/50 and 29400/50. Class 100(i) In apparatus for separating sheets from a pile 2 and forwarding them by further suckers 3 towards a conveyer 4, the suckers 3 are carried by tubes 6 secured to a transverse shaft 7 which is rocked by means of a. cam 11 acting through a rod 10 which is connected to the shaft 7 in such a way that the amount of movement of the suckers 3 can be varied during the operation of the apparatus. As shown in Fig. 1, the rod 10 is pivoted at 15 to a lever 14 the other end of which is connected to a screw 16 passing radially through the shaft 7, and an operating arm 9 is secured to the shaft 7 and pivoted to the lever 14. Rotation of the screw 16 rocks the link 14 about its connection to the arm 9, and varies the radial distance of the pivot 15 from the shaft 7, so that the angular movement of the shaft 7 is varied. In Fig. 2 the end of the rod 10 is guided in the curved slot of a lever 22 pivoted at one end 23 to the frame 24, and pivoted at the other end to a nut 25a on a screw 25 passing through a boss on the frame. A slider block 20 on the end of the rod 10 engages a slot 21 in an operating arm 9a secured to the shaft 7 to rock the latter, and by adjusting the nut 25a the position of the block 20 relative to the axis of the shaft 7 can be varied. In another modification, instead of the shaft 7, there are two co-axial shafts, each having a tube 6 secured thereto. One shaft is rocked directly from a push rod 10, and the other shaft is driven from the first shaft through an adjustable connection, whereby the movement of the second tube 6 and sucker 3 can be varied relative to the first. In a further modification, two co-axial shafts are also used, each rocked by a separate push rod 10 through adjustable means, whereby the rocking movements of each tube 6 can be varied.
