In a suction cleaner of the handle propelled type having a port 60 Fig. 1 for the insertion of a converter 61 Fig. 2 for off-the-floor cleaning and means for adjusting the height of the nozzle 2 above the floor to a number of positions including an inoperative position, the port 60 has a cover 65 which may be locked against movement to its open position except when the nozzle height adjusting means is positioned to raise the nozzle to its inoperative position. Nozzle height adjustment is effected by vertical displacement of the cleaner body 1 relative to front wheels 22. To this end a shaft 23 about which the front wheels 22 are freely rotatable is carried by upwardly spring biased arms 24 pivoted on body studs 25, and cams 27 rigidly secured to the shaft 23 and having surfaces a, b, c, d at increasing radial distances from the shaft axis engage body brackets 29 to give one of four nozzle settings viz., "thin," "medium, "thick," or "converter" as indicated on a drum 51. The cams 27 are rotated clockwise by adjustment of the shaft 23 which carries a four-toothed rachet 31 actuated by a pawl 32 pivotally carried by a slide bar 33 itself actuated by a pedal operated bell crank 45 against a spring 43. The indicating drum shaft 51a is rotated by a rachet 53 secured thereto and actuated by a pawl 54 carried by the bar 33. The operative connection between the cover 65 which is pivoted about a spindle 67 comprises a cranked end 68 of the spindle which engages the long arm of a spring-biased bell crank 69 pivoted to a boss 70 and having its short arm displaced by a pin 71 engaging a slot in a link 73 encircling the shaft 23. Normally the cranked end 68 is prevented from rotating clockwise to open the cover 65 by the long arm of a bell crank 78 pivoted on a boss stud 79. Complete depression of the link 73 however which occurs on moving the bar 33 to the "converter" position shown removes the lock and allows the cover 65 to be opened by the bell crank 69. To prevent actuation of the pedal 47 when the converter is in use the bar 33 carries a tongue 86 which abuts a barrier 85 swung into position on inserting the converter.
