Abstract

533,587. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Aug. 16, 1939, No. 23643. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1938. [Class 8 (i)] In a vacuum cleaner normally propelled over the carpet for floor cleaning and convertible to off-the-floor cleaning by attachment of a flexible hose, the mouth of the floor nozzle is closed during off-the-floor cleaning by a valve 14 within the nozzle. The adapter 32 is inserted in a port 18 and held by a spring latch. The plate 17 which normally closes the port 18 is pivotally carried by a bracket 19 on the valve. The bearings of the rotary agitator are releasably carried in an eccentric position on the ends of the rotary semi-cylindrical valve shown, and the agitator is thus lifted from the floor and its belt slackened in the off-the-floor position.
