690,954. Cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 23, 1951 [Oct. 24, 1950], No. 25888/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. A drainage resistant impregnated paperinsulated cable is made by building up on the conductor a laminated dielectric body in which solid rubber is distributed, and impregnating the body with an oleaginous liquid which is free, or substantially free, from rubber to form within the body a liquid solution of rubber in oil containing vulcanizing ingredients, and thereafter vulcanizing the rubber to convert the solution into an irreversible non-displaceable gel. The laminated body may comprise strips of preimpregnated paper having a thin layer of rubber attached to one surface, or the rubber may be applied as a discontinuous deposit to one or both surfaces. Alternatively a rubber thread may be wound on to the cable in some or all of the gaps between the turns of paper. The spaces between the paper strips may be filled with the oleaginous liquid while the strips are being lapped on the conductor, using a machine of the kind described in Specification 182,510, [Class 36]. After the cable has been sheathed and the impregnant homogenized it is heated to vulcanize the dissolved rubber and convert the solution into a stable gel.
