Abstract
694,986. Air-space cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. March 19, 1952 [March 20, 1951], No. 6688/51. Class 36. In an insulated cable comprising a central conductor 3 enclosed within a coaxial outer member 4 and spaced therefrom by an insulating strip 1 applied to the conductor in an open helical winding, the strip is divided into radial projections 5 by slots 2 which are approximately parallel to the axis of the conductor and shallower than the radial thickness of the strip, so that the projections 5 are joined by a continuous web 6 adjacent the surface of the conductor. The strip is provided with slots which are oblique to its two major surfaces before application to the conductor, the angle of obliquity depending on the ultimate angle of lay of the strip. The coaxial outer member 4 may consist of two layers 7, 9, one or both of which may be of metal.
