Abstract

689,639. Ironing-machines. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. June 4, 1951. [June 2, 1950] No. 13823/50. Class 138 (ii). A laundry ironing machine of the type in which material to be ironed is passed by tapes or cords between a series of rolls and the troughs of heated wave-form bed comprises a plurality of padded rolls a and at least a pair of parallel wave-form bed areas A, A<SP>1</SP> disposed with their troughs at diametrically opposite sides of the rolls, and means whereby the material to be ironed is passed between the rolls and the troughs of one bed in one direction and then between the rolls and troughs of the other bed in the opposite direction. The rolls a in Fig. 1 are mounted in fixed bearings in end frames of the machine, and one or both beds may be pivoted in the end frames so as to be movable outwardly and downwardly as shown by dotted lines, to afford access to the rolls. Each bed is mounted on steel balls in a suitable guide, Figs. 2, 4 and 4a (not shown), and the pressure of each bed on the rolls may be adjusted by means of a compression spring and screw arrangement. The beds may be heated by steam or electrically and may comprise a single hollow unit, or a series of hollow. box form sectional units, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). The outer side of each bed may be of convex form over which the material is passed by a feeding band or tapes e to pre-heat and smooth the material before ironing, and to dry and finish the material before leaving the machine. A third bed unit or a heated guide plate d may be resiliently mounted between the lower ends of the bed units A, A'. The band or tapes e are mounted on guide rolls f, g, hand i. The roll i is provided with a tensioning device i<SP>1</SP>, and is carried upon an arm mounted for pivotal movement to the position shown dotted to enable the bed A<SP>1</SP> to be raised or lowered by a cable k passing round a cable drum k<SP>1</SP>. The work is fed into the machine by means of an endless apron o and an arcuate guide plate o<SP>1</SP>, and is delivered over an arcuate discharge plate o<SP>2</SP> onto a table or conveyer (not shown). Fig. 3 shows an arrangement for carrying away moisture and steam by a natural or fan produced circulation of air. Air enters at a partition p<SP>1</SP> and follows the path indicated by arrows, p, p<SP>2</SP> and p3 being cylindrical partitions each arranged coaxially with one of the rolls a. In a modification, the work first passes upwardly between the troughs and rolls and then turns around the top roll to descend between the rolls and other troughs. In a further modification (Fig. 7) a set of rolls a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> and a<SP>3</SP>, a<SP>4</SP> is provided on each side of a single bed unit A<SP>2</SP> and one or more outer bed units A<SP>3</SP> are provided. The machine is again provided with an endless band or tapes e and additional guide plates d. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the arrangement of Fig. 7 is turned through 90 degrees.
