Abstract

A heat-insensitive steel, having a relatively high elastic limit at a temperature of 350 DEG C and a favourable ratio of elastic limit to tensile strength at room temperature, has the following composition: C 0.1-0.3 per cent; Mn 0.6-1.0 per cent; Cu 0.6-1.2 per cent; Ni 0.5-1.2 per cent; Si 0.3-0.5 per cent; Mo 0-0.3 per cent; Cr 0-0.4 per cent; one or more of Ta, Nb, B and Zr traces to 0.06 per cent; Fe, together with conventionally low S and P contents, 0.01-0.1 per cent each, forming the balance. The alloy may be heat treated by normalization, e.g. at 880 DEG C, followed by slow cooling at a rate which may be 2 DEG to 7 DEG per minute to below 200 DEG C, e.g. to 150 DEG C and then by red-heat stabilization within the range 600-675 DEG C for a time sufficient to achieve the desired degree of stabilization. The steel is particularly suitable for pressure equipment which is subjected to mechanical strains at high temperature, such as boilers.
