688,523. Pulverizing units. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. July 20, 1951 [July 24, 19501, No. 17251/51. Class 59. In a beater mill in which classification is effected by entrainment of particles by gaseous fluid flowing through the mill housing towards an axial outlet, the peripheral speed of the rotary beater means of the mill is adjustable to control the particle size. In the form shown, pairs of oppositelydirected beater arms 13 to 16 are slidable within apertures 17 to 20 in the mill shaft and include racks engaged bv the opposite sides of pinions 9 to: 12 mounted on a manually-rotatable spindle 8. Rotation of the spindle projects the beater arms outwardly or withdraws them inwardly. Removable beater heads 21 are mounted on the ends of the beater arms. An inlet 2 is provided for the passage of air and the material to be pulverized. A fan rotor 28, 29 mounted on the mill shaft 3 draws the air and entrained particles from the housing 1 through an outlet formed by the annular space between the shaft and a baffle ring 30 into a fan housing 31 provided with an outlet 32. The outlet from the housing 1 may be provided with an adjustable throttling device. The peripheral speed of the rotary beater means may be adjusted by their being driven through a hydraulic variable-speed coupling or variable-speed power transmission means or by a variable-speed motor. In the latter case, the fan rotor is driven at a constant speed from a separate motor. The mill may be 'used 'for effecting direct firing of a furnace with pulverized fuel.
