Abstract
688,376. Supply systems for welding arcs. FOSTER TRANSFORMERS & SWITCHGEAR, Ltd., and JENNINGS, R. E. May 30, 1950 [May 31, 1949; Nov. 8, 1949], Nos. 14565/49 and 28562/49. Class 38 (iv). A system for automatically disconnecting a welding electrode E from the secondary of a welding transformer T when the operator breaks the arc, whilst providing for automatic reconnection to the transformer when the electrode is again brought into the striking position, comprises a step-down transformer T1 connected across the secondary of the welding transformer and supplying under non-welding conditions a low voltage to the electrode over contacts r2 of a relay R and the primary winding of current transformer CT. Normally open contacts r1 of the relay isolate the electrode from the welding transformer. If the electrode is now brought into contact with the work, to initiate an arc, the current transformer is energized from transformer T1 and actuates the relay which changes over contacts r1, r2 and holds in due to the flow of welding current through the current transformer. Several modifications are described. The relay may be as described in Specification 688,458, [Group XXXVII].
