In a fishing reel of the rotatable drum type having reversible spring pawl mechanism adapted to provide alternative right and left-hand check, the spring pawl 1 mechanism comprises two pawls 4 arranged to cooperate with a single ratchet wheel 10 and adapted to be employed alternatively or in conjunction with one another for either right or left-hand check action. Each pawl 4 comprises a substantially triangular element with a slot 4a extending inwardly from one side to engage a headed pivot pin 5, a spring 6 of the hairpin type being mounted on a headed fulcrum 7 to maintain the pawl in either the operative or inoperative position in which it is put. The pawls 4 are so shaped that, when the corner 4b engages the ratchet wheel, the rounded end 4c of the side 4d that engages the spring 6 is at a less radial distance from the pivotal axis than is the other corner 4e, thereby providing a check action in one direction of motion. A check action in the opposite direction is obtained by sliding the pawl laterally to remove it, and then turning it over before replacing it. The tension of the springs may be regulated by a transverse bridge piece 8 which bears upon the free ends 6a of the springs and is adjustable by a screw provided with an operating knob 9a.
