Abstract

684,402. Making paper &c. bags. ARNOLD, J. C. (Pneumatic Scale Corporation, Ltd.). July 11, 1949, No. 18319/49. Class 94(ii) A bag or like container is made from a blank 10 of material such as metal foil, glassine paper, parchment paper, and other uncoated papers and also the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane ", and has a bottom closure and side seam formed by stripes 12, 14, Fig. 1, of pressure sensitive adhesive that effects sealing at a temperature not exceeding 110‹F., while the top closure is formed by a stripe 25 of highmelt thermosetting adhesive having a melting point of at least 180‹F. The stripes of adhesive are disposed at short distances from the marginal edges of the blank in order that the adhesive shall not spread over the edges on to the forming block when the latter is heated to the required temperature in making the bag. The stripe 25 of highmelt adhesive is heat sealed to form a top closure preferably of the fin type. In a modification a bag blank is provided with a stripe of high melt thermosetting adhesive at a short distance from each of three marginal edges to form a longitudinal side seam and top and bottom closures, while in a further modification the top and bottom closures are formed by stripes of high melt adhesive and the side seam is formed by a stripe of pressure sensitive adhesive. Fig. 4 shows a completed bag used as a lining for a carton 50 which, after filling, is sealed by a top closure of the elongated type produced by heated presser-plates 52, 54 at a temperature of approximately 180<SP>o</SP>F. The adhesives employed in making the bag are of known types the compositions of which are stated in the Specification.
