Abstract

855,804. Valve bags. LYONS & CO. Ltd., J. Dec. 30, 1958 [Sept. 30, 1957], No. 30524/57. Class 94(2). An initially flat valved beverage container of thermoplastic sheet material such as polythene has the sealing valve formed by doubled over parts of the sheet material. In the embodiment shown two sheets of material are initially heat sealed over the areas 23, 24 and then the sheets are folded back about a line 25 before being heat sealed at the edges 26 leaving a valved opening 27. All four thicknesses of material are sealed together over only small areas 28, 29 at the extreme ends of the doubled over portions forming the valve opening and these seals are effected in two stages. If desired the bottom of the sheets may be left unsealed until the container has been filled. To strengthen the valve, the area between the seals 23, 24 and the seal 26 may be sealed. In a further modification a single sheet folded over to form the bottom of the container is used the top part or valve not being turned into the container, but the doubled over edges only being sealed at the ends of the valve opening.
