Class 120(ii) [Also in Group XXIV] In change-speed gearing for driving from one end long lengths of shafting, such as the intergeared shafts 10, 11 for the drafting rollers of a textile spinning machine, a number of pawls 20 are provided to prevent reverse rotation of the gearing due to the resilience of the shafts when the machinery is stopped to change a pick-off gear 16. The five weighted pawls 20, which may be turned to an inoperative position when the machine is running, engage a ratchet wheel 14 on the shaft 10 and are staggered by intervals of one-fifth of the tooth pitch. The shaft 17 of the gear 16 is mounted in an arm 17<SP>1</SP> angularly adjustable by bolts 17<SP>3</SP>. The gear 16 is splined on a radially-toothed clutch member 23 which is mounted on an extension 24 of a second clutch member integral with the shaft 17, and a nut 27 clamps the clutch and gear. Slackening of the nut 27 to remove the gear 16 allows disengagement of the clutch, thereby relieving the tooth pressure between gears 15 and 16, while the shafts 10, 11 are held by the pawls 20, and allowing the arm 17<SP>1</SP> to be swung away to change the gear 16.
