Abstract

145,258. Cansell, W. E. June 23, 1919. Stop-motions.-In stop-motions for use in napraising and other machines for dealing with fabrics wherein two engaging members are normally driven at the same speed from a power-driven part of the machine and by the passage of the fabric over a roller respectively, one of the members being moved axially to stop the machine when the members are driven at different speeds, the means for moving the belt fork or equivalent part of the stopping position is actuated by a power-driven part of the machine. As shown in Fig. 1, two pieces of fabric pass over rollers a, a<1> to a power-driven roll l. The roller a is fast on a shaft b which carries a splined sleeve c having a clutch member f normally in engagement with a toothed wheel g loose on the shaft b and meshing with a wheel h loose on a sleeve j on the shaft k of the roll l. If the fabric passing over the roller a<1> breaks or tears out, this roller ceases to rotate and a slidable nut d carried thereby engages a screwed part c<2> of the sleeve c, thus disengaging the clutch member f from the wheel g, which ceases to drive the wheel h. The continued rotation of the sleeve j causes an internal thread on the wheel h to engage a threaded portion j<2> of the sleeve, and the wheel is forced into engagement with a normally idle disk o adapted to drive a pulley u<1> connected with means to operate the belt fork. If the fabric passing over the roller a tears, this roller ceases to rotate and the wheel g is stopped, the belt fork being operated as before. In a modification, a number of pieces of fabric pass over a roller a, Fig. 4, fast on a shaft b carrying a toothed wheel g<1> in gear with a wheel k screwed on a sleeve fast on the shaft k of the roll l. A band brake q on the shaft b is adjusted so that if one or more of the pieces of fabric break or tear out, the roller a ceases to rotate and the wheel h is forced into engagement with the disk o to stop the machine. The disk engages the pulley u<1> which is connected by a belt u with a pulley u<2> having a toothed quadrant v<1> in engagement with a rack v<2> carrying the belt fork v<4>. When the belt is moved to the loose pulley v<7>, a rod x pivoted to the rack moves to the right and its upper end engages the pivoted shaft w of the pulley u<1> to move it, against the action of a spring, out of engagement with the disk o. According to the Provisional Specification, the belt fork may be operated by chain gearing, and a brake may be applied to the driving- shaft when the stop-motion acts.
