Abstract
682,031. Making files; rasps, &c. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 25, 1949. No. 23619/50. Divided out of and addition to 681,986. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Forging.-In a forging or swaging machine of the type described in the parent Specification, in which diametrically opposed dies in a fixed member are actuated radially against a blank by rollers &c. on a flywheel, die actuating members carried by the fixed member are interposed between the die carriers and the rollers and are smoothly engaged by the rollers to move the die carriers progressively. Dies 17, Fig. 1, in carriers 11 are radially slidable in grooves 3 on the end of a fixed head and are driven inwards by rollers 7, 8 on a flywheel 4 which engage curved forces 5a of die actuating members 5 mounted on pivots 6 in the end of the fixed head. Rollers 9 on the ends of the member 5 engaging the carriers 11 may be rubber covered to reduce noise. In a modification, dies 24, Fig. 3, are radially slidable in T-grooves 15 on the end of a fixed head 14, Fig. 4, and are actuated by rollers 7, 8 through arcuate actuating members 10, which are also radially slidable in the T-grooves 15. The engagement faces 22 of the actuating members 10 are tapered and the dies 24 are axially adjustable for wear by a ring 33 screwed in a cover-plate 28 attached to the head 14 by bolts 29. Slots 30 in the actuating members 10 are provided for the bolts 29. Relative movement between the actuating members is limited by metal stops 19 engaged in slots 20 in the radial faces of the actuating members 10. The rollers 7, 8 may be filled with rubber and metal bushings to reduce noise and wear and rubber shock-absorbers 35 may be provided on the outer faces of the actuating members 10.
