Abstract
889,619. Swaging. SCHWARZ, J. Aug. 20, 1958, No. 26758/58. Class 83 (4). A swaging-machine has a rotating hammer block 88, Fig. 9, with its hammers 85, which is removable from the machine. The radially slidable hammers which are actuated by engagement with rollers 104 on a fixed or rotating carrier 97, 98 are biased outwardly by springs 41 abutting cross members 54 passing through slots in the hammers. These hammers actuate hammer dies 83 radially slidable in a housing 78 and biased outwardly by springs 86. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the machine has four sets of hammers 25-28 and hammer dies 29-32 in series both being rotated by a shaft 3 driven through clutch 7, 8 by a pulley 6. The outer ends of the hammers co-operate with sets of conical rollers 13 and the hammer block 10 may be moved axially by hand wheels 20, 23 for varying the relative axial position of the rollers and hammers and hence the effective stroke. The workpiece which may be a bar or tube is fed through a nozzle 36 and guide tube 37 whose position is adjustable axially by a hand wheel 39. In a similar embodiment, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), the hammer dies do not rotate and the rollers 13 in adjacent sets are staggered. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the hammer block 88 and die housing 78 are driven through splines 77, 92 from the shaft 3 and pulley 107. The hammer block 88 is adjustable axially by a nut 90 and the die housing 78 by hand wheel 23. Ball-bearing type conical rollers 104 are mounted on pins 102 carried by a split rotating housing, 97, 98 provided with belt grooves 106. Both pulley 107 and housing 97, 98 are driven by separate electric motors in the same or opposite directions through change-speed gearing whereby the rate of striking may be regulated from maximum to zero without stopping the motors. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the ball bearing rollers are cylindrical but are mounted on inclined pins ; adjustment for wear is provided for the rollers. The hammers may slide in brass or bronze sleeves, Fig. 12 (not shown), and may have shaped outer ends to provide for a slower inward movement than outward movement. In a further embodiment, Fig. 16, the hammers 161-165 act directly on the work and are actuated by elongated inclined rollers 138 carried by a rotating housing 135. Axial adjustment of the rotating hammer block 146 is effected by a hand wheel 159 through gearing 158 and threaded nut 150.
