Abstract

Amines are prepared by reacting a saturated aliphatic primary alcohol containing 2-13 carbon atoms or the corresponding aldehyde, a saturated aliphatic secondary alcohol of 2-13 carbon atoms or the corresponding ketone, cyclohexanol or a homologue or the corresponding ketone containing up to 13 carbon atoms, or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol or tetrahydrofurfural with ammonia and hydrogen at 140-230 DEG C. under at least 10 atmospheres pressure in presence of a foraminate hydrogenating metal catalyst from Group VIII which has been treated with a soluble alkaline earth metal basic compound. A preferred pressure range is 10-25 atmospheres and the reaction may be in the liquid or vapour phase. Alkaline earth compounds specified are calcium, strontium, and barium hydroxides. In examples: (1) ethanol, (2) n-propanol, (3) iso-propanol, (4) iso-butanol, (5) n-butanol, (6) sec-butanol, (7) 3,5,5-trimethyl-hexanol, (8) cyclohexanol, (9) tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol are each reacted with ammonia and hydrogen in presence of a foraminate nickel-aluminium catalyst which has been treated with barium hydroxide solution.
