Abstract

Diaminodicyclohexylmethanes and their homologues containing alkyl substituents in the nucleus are obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding diaminodiphenylmethanes at a pressure of at least 200 atmospheres and at temperatures of more than 200 DEG C. in the presence of a hydrophobic solvent and using as catalyst a mixture of nickel, cobalt or cobalt oxide with an alkaline earth oxide. Specified starting materials are 4,41- and 2,21-diaminodiphenylmethane and 3,31-dimethyl-4,41-diaminodiphenylmethane and suitable solvents are cyclohexane, hydrogenated naphthalenes, and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as ligroin. In an example a solution of 4,41-diamino-diphenylmethane in cyclohexane is treated with hydrogen at 215-220 DEG C. and at 220 atmospheres pressure in the presence of a mixture of calcium oxide and cobalt oxide as catalyst to yield 4,41-diaminodicyclohexylmethane. Comparative yields are given when the example is carried out using tetrahydrofurane, cyclohexanol or cyclohexylamine as solvent instead of cyclohexane and also when no solvent is used.
