Abstract
o-Dihydroxy aromatic compounds are made by treating the corresponding o-dihalogeno compounds (not fluoro) in the presence of water and absence of oxygen, in a vessel made of or surfaced or lined with copper, with at least 2 mols. of barium hydroxide or with at least 1 mol. of a soluble barium salt and sufficient alkali metal hydroxide to unite with all the acid radicals present; the reaction takes place at 200-250 DEG C. at a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres gauge, preferably 100 atmospheres. A copper catalyst such as cuprous oxide may also be present, e.g. up to 1 per cent by weight of the halogen compound. Preferably 2.5-3 mols. of barium hydroxide are used and the initial alkali strength is 2.0-3.5 N. The reactants are kept in the liquid phase by applying an initial pressure of nitrogen. The product is isolated by acidification with an aqueous mineral acid, extraction with an organic solvent (e.g. ether) and removal of the latter by distillation. Examples are given of the production of catechol from o-dichlorobenzene. Specification 425,230 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification an enamel-lined vessel may be used for the reaction.
