Feed by awls and needles. -In a machine having a work-engaging device such as an awl 6 mounted on a carrier 28 which is oscillatable on pivots 68 and reciprocable along the pivotal axis by means comprising a pair of substantially parallel arms 60, 62 mounted on parallel pivots and connected by a link 42 between the pivots and their outer ends, for example as described in U.S.A Specification 1,971,575, adjusting means movable with the carrier are arranged to press the outer ends of the arms towards each other. In the form shown, in which the arm 62 is actuated by adjustable connection from a cam-actuated lever 52, the adjusting means comprises screws 66 threaded into the carrier pivots 68 and bearing against the ends of the arms 60, 62; by adjustment of the screws the carrier may be shifted along the line of feed to position the device 6 as required. The mechanism keeps the arms bearing against the insides of their pivots when wear has occurred and thus avoids the effect on the feed of lost motion which would otherwise occur.
