An axle-box of the built-up type comprises a two-part shell housing f, f<SP>1</SP> for bearings b, b<SP>1</SP>, disposed in two load plates e and welded thereto at g, and welded to each other at h. The half shell housings are arranged to be sprung into position before welding. Wear plates which also act as stiffeners to the load plates e are provided.
