Abstract

674,434. Swivelling-couplings. SPENCE, T., RAMSBOTTOM, J., LOMAX, H., and RAMSBOTTOM, J., (trading as STERLING TOOL CO.). Jan. 24, 1950, No. 1820/50. Class 38 (i). A rotatable connector comprises hoods 1, 2 co-operating with a centre-piece 17 to which is secured a terminal block 7 carrying a metal ring 11 in contact with metal balls 35 which ride on a ring 12 on a corresponding terminal block 8 which is secured to the block 7 by a central conducting stem 23. Connections are made to the rings by terminals 14, one of which may serve to secure the terminal block 7 to the centre block 17 through a lug 16 thereon, and another 26 to support a flexible brush 29 which engages a cylinder 28 connected to a terminal 27 on the block 8. The stem 23 rides on ballbearings 24 and is provided at each end with ball contacts 22 which rest in spring-leaf contacts 21 connected to a terminal on each block. In modifications, the rings may be spring- mounted and the stem 23 may be insulating, the circuit comprising the leaves 21 and the balls 22 being replaced by a further ring and set of ballbearings ; also the stem may be spring-mounted on its ball-bearings and the balls 35 replaced by spring-loaded brushes, Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 (not shown).
