Abstract
674,115. Sterilizing milk &c. CHERRYBURRELL CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1948 [Feb. 24, 1947], No. 1485/51. Divided out of 674,032. Class 49. [Also in Group XIII] For sterilizing milk and other liquid foods there is employed the apparatus of Fig. 20 in which a group of spaced heat exchanging plates 42 is divided by terminal frames 164, 264 into three sections, viz. a heating section H, a cooling section C, and a regenerative section R, the space between two adjacent plates being bounded by marginal gaskets on the plates 42. Milk to be treated is drawn by vacuum created by the pump 115, from the supply tank 112 through the pipe 113, to the terminal frame 264 from whence it passes through alternate spaces between the plates of the regenerative section R to the outlet conduit of the terminal frame 164, through the pipe 114 to the pump and then to the inlet of the terminal frame 164 after which it passes through the heating section H and through the pipe 117 to a thermostatically controlled flow diversion valve 118. If at the correct temperature the milk is then directed by the valve 118 through the conduit 120, to the terminal frame 164 and through the regenerative section R where it is cooled by heat exchange with the inflowing milk from the tank 112 and then to the terminal frame 264. The milk flows from the terminal frame 264 through the cooling section C to the compression element 80 from which it is discharged through the conduit 121. If the milk has not attained the correct temperature when it reaches the flow diversion valve 118 after passing through the regenerative and heating sections of the apparatus, the valve operates to divert the flow through the pipe 123 and back to the supply tank 112. Cooling water for the cooling section C is supplied from the main to the inlet conduit 202 of the compression element 80.from which it flows through the plates of that section in heat exchange with the milk passing therethrough to the terminal frame 264 and back through the cooling section to the element 80 from which it is discharged through the conduit 203. Hot water for the heating section H is supplied to the lower end of the standard 1 from a water heater W and circulates through alternate spaces between the plates of that section to the terminal frame 164 from which it is returned to the upper end of the standard 1 and thence through the pipe 201 to the heater W.
