Abstract

673,987. Air inlets for aircraft engines. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. July 18, 1950 [Aug. 23, 1949], No. 21950/49. Class 4. [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXI] An air intake in which the air passes through an annular duct is provided with a debris guard comprising a plurality of members each having the outline of a sector of said annulus, said members being pivotally mounted on the outer wall of the annular duct and movable from an inoperative position in which they constitute a part of said wall, to an operative position extending across the annular duct. In the embodiment shown, applied to the air intake of a gas turbine, the forward part 12 of the cowling and the forward part 8 of the centre bullet are movable axially with respect to the main parts and arms 14 support the part 12 on the part 8, which in turn is supported on the main part 9 of the bullet by a pivoted link 15. Alternatively a spigoted connection may be used. The parts 8 and 12 are moved by a plurality of circumferentially spaced jacks 18 and adjacent each jack a linkage comprising elements 2.5, 27, 28, 29, 30 connects the fixed part of the cowling with a pivoted sector 23 of a perforated debris guard so arranged that it may lie inoperatively against the inner wall of the cowling 12 or may occupy the operative position shown in which it covers the duct 5 and prevents solid particles from entering the engine. A circumferential grid 35, exposed by the forward movement of the part 12, is provided to supplement the flow of air through the debris guard. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 668,638.
