Abstract
671,413. Slings for handling loads. AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO., Inc. July 19, 1949. [May 20, 1949] No. 19018/49. Class 78 (iv). In a sling comprising a noose formed in a chain by passing the standing end of the chain through a tubular portion of a guide member secured to the other end of the chain, a locking member is pivoted to the guide member so that it may be moved to a position in which it partly obstructs the opening of the tubular portion to form an opening for one link of the chain, which opening is of a size and shape to prevent passage of the adjacent link in the standing length of the chain. The member 13 shown in Fig. 1 is secured by a bolt 14 to the end of a chain 10 which passes through a tubular collar 12 of the member to form a sling. A plate 16 pivoted by an upstanding lug 18 on a bolt 15 is formed with V-shaped slot 17 which rests on the mouth of the tubular collar 12 and as shown receives one link of the chain while preventing the link above from passing into the collar. When the sling is lifted by the free length of the chain 10 the plate 16 turns about its pivot to allow the chain to pass through the collar 12 in tightening around the load.
