Abstract

958,539. Combined grab and magnetic lifting device. JOSEPH WESTWOOD & CO. Ltd. Jan. 2, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39091/61. Heading B8H. The four jaws 2 of a grab, pivoted about horizontal axes 38 to a frame 1, enclose an electromagnet 10. Links 4 open and close the jaws when the frame 1 is moved with respect to a frame 3 by a rope 6 and pulleys 5. The jaws 2 are also pivoted about vertical pins which pass through lugs 37, Fig. 3, the amount of movement being limited by V-shaped plates 42. Abutment plates 43 limit opening of the jaws. The links 4 are pivoted about vertical pins 34, Fig. 1, which pass through lugs 33. One end of the rope 6 is attached to the frame 3 and the other end passes through guide rollers 8, 9, Fig. 2 (not shown). When the jaws are fully open they are above the level of the lower face of the magnet 10 so that objects which are too large to be encompassed by the jaws may be lifted.
