Abstract

668,984. Raising sunken ships. JAMISON, T. K. April 12, 1950. No. 9045/50. Class 68 (ii). Sunken ships are raised by attaching thereto a number of cables 34 the other ends of which are secured to lifting units 32 carried by a pontoon 24. Each unit 32 (one for each cable) comprises a drum 48 rotated through reduction gear by the guided descent of a water-filled tank 36. On reaching its bottom position the tank is emptied into a stationary tank 80 and is then raised again either by a supplementary winch 82 or hydraulically, whereupon it is refilled and allowed to descend again to impart another increment of rotation to the drum which has been locked during the raising of the tank. Descent of the tanks is checked by pistons carried by rods 148 secured to the tanks working against hydraulic pressure in cylinders arranged within the stationary tanks 80. The valves for relieving the pressure in these cylinders are arranged to operate simultaneously and uniformly for all cylinders whereby the movements of the various cables are co-ordinated.
