Abstract

1,271,248. Grab buckets. R. W. MARTIN, and J. R. SPEARS. 14 July, 1969 [24 Sept., 1968], No. 35404/69. Heading B8H. A grab bucket 16, Fig. 1, is raised by a rope 5 and closed by an hydraulic ram 10 and a cable 19. Pressure fluid is supplied to the ram 10 from a pump 30, which is operated by the rope 8, originally used for closing the grab bucket. This arrangement allows the bucket to be used more effectively on sloping surfaces. Pressure fluid may be alternatively supplied to the closing ram from a conventional pump and accumulator on the crane. Control adjacent the lifting station may be provided, when the grab is replaced by a hook, Fig. 5, by a valve 62. Fig. 8 shows an embodiment in which the grab bucket is closed by a ram 77. The piston rod 78, Fig. 10, is attached to a guided carriage 94 from which the closing ropes 96 for the grab bucket are suspended. A conventional bucket may be suspended from the closing device by an adaptor plate 110, Fig. 16. The upper side of the cylinder 77 may be pressurized with air to give rapid opening of the grab. Pressure fluid is supplied by a pump 135, Fig. 8. The housing 76 for the ram 77 may be suspended on gimbals, Figs. 17, 18 (not shown).
