Abstract

668,387. Mouldings; tubes and rings from rubber &c. DOWTY EQUIPMENT. Ltd.. MILLS, J. A. W., and HANDLEY, W. A. April 21, 1950. [Feb. 14, 1949] No. 4001/49. Class 87(ii). A tube or ring is formed by packing slightly more material, e.g. uncured rubber, than is required to form the finished article into a casing 27, closed at its lower end by a hydraulically operated mandrel 21. A piston 33 is placed on the material, and an end plate 30 is fixed to the top of the casing by arms 32. A hydraulic pressure-head 39 is lowered against the piston 33, until the pressure in the cylinder 37 increases to a predetermined value at which a relief valve 45 comes into operation. The mandrel 21 is then forced up slowly through the material, while the pressure is maintained constant by the cylinder 37 and the valve 45, until the mandrel engages in a conical recess in the piston and the piston abuts against the end plate 30. Excess material escapes through a hole 34<SP>1</SP> in the piston. The pressure-head is raised, by fluid pressure, and the unit comprising the casing 27, the piston 33, and the mandrel 21 are removed along rails 25 and 26 and placed in a curing chamber. After curing, the mandrel is ejected, e.g. by a ram. The machine may be used the other way up. The relief valve may be replaced by a variable escape orifice. Liners 29 may be used to make tubes of various sizes. The mandrel and the inner surfaces of the liners may be chromium plated.
