Abstract
A device for compacting moulding sand comprises a squeeze head 20 having cavities 27 within which hydraulically extensible rods 43 having peen feet 67 are arranged, each of the rods 43 being surrounded in its cavity by a flexible cylindrical sleeve 30 providing an interference fit with the rod, said sleeve being expandable within the cavity by exerting hydraulic pressure on it so as to be releasable from said interference fit to permit axial displacement of the rod 43. The fluid is supplied to annular grooves 54 and an axial groove 55 on the inner surface of each cylinder 30 from a source 63. The rods 43 are then displaceable by fluid supplied from a source 51, the downward movement of the rods 43 being limited by snap rings 47. In use, the rods 43 and feet 67 are set at predetermined heights by means of gauge pins 80, Fig. 1, and are then locked in position by the cylinders 30. The whole squeeze head 20 is then moved downwards to compact the sand in a flask (75). An alternative method of setting the feet 67 at the required height involves applying to the unlocked rods an hydraulic pressure corresponding to the unlocked rods an hydraulic pressure corresponding to the final sand pressure required and lowering the head 20 slowly to compress the sand. The rods 43 are thus forced back to desired heights and are then locked in position.
