Abstract
668,365. Stuffing-box and piston packings. SIMMER, O. Oct. 21, 1947. [March 25, 1947] No. 28102/47. Classes 122(i) and 122(v). The wiping edge 4 of a sleeve 1 of resilient packing material engaging by its own elasticity a shaft &c. 10 to be sealed, and also pressed thereagainst by a coil spring 5 is formed on a flange 6 having holding stirrups 17 which encircle the coil spring to retain it in position and are arranged in a circle and spaced apart from one another. The flange 6 has a conical outer surface 15 grooved at 16 to receive the spring 5 and the stirrups are either embedded in the flange or integral with it, in which case they may be interconnected by thin rubber skins protecting the spring from rust. The skins and stirrups may present an undulating external appearance. The sleeve 1 is vulcanized into the housing 9. Specification 580,871 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes a coil spring 5 wholly embedded in pressure-applying packing material. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
